NASHVILLE — The Titans turned a field-position game into a defensive rout Sunday, beating the Colts 31-0 by pairing a steady ground attack with pressure that repeatedly wrecked Indianapolis’ passing game. Jose Wilson’s team is now 4-0 and 3-0 in the division; the Colts fell to 1-3.
John Kerr opened the scoring with a 48-yard field goal, then added a 30-yarder as Tennessee moved ahead 6-0. The second kick left Indianapolis with little room to answer, and the Titans’ defense immediately tightened the screws: cornerback Daniel Salguero intercepted Brian Brown at the Colts’ 23. Tennessee needed only two plays to capitalize, with Phillip Richardson completing a 17-yard touchdown pass to Billy Alvarado. Kerr’s extra point made it 13-0 with 2:23 left in the first quarter.
The Titans’ offense did not need to force the ball through the air. It finished with 178 rushing yards on 40 carries, compared with 130 passing yards, and Alvarado supplied the game’s most versatile workload: 102 rushing yards and a touchdown, plus 38 receiving yards and another score. Tennessee added a 30-yard Kerr field goal in the second quarter to take a 16-0 lead. The offense converted just 3 of 16 third downs, but reached the red zone six times and scored three touchdowns there, keeping its drives productive enough to build separation.
A third-quarter special-teams mistake gave the Titans a short field. After a punt pinned the Colts at their 5, James Obrien fumbled and Paul Johnson recovered for Tennessee at the 4. Alvarado punched in the touchdown on the next play, stretching the margin to 23-0.
From there, the defensive front dictated the terms. Salguero picked off Brown again in the fourth quarter, and Tennessee finished with eight sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Thomas Price recorded three sacks and forced a fumble; his sack-fumble recovery at the Colts’ 4 set up a sequence that ended with another Price sack for a safety and a 25-0 lead. Stephen Myrick added two sacks, while Cliff Garza had a sack and a forced fumble.
Richard Cook’s one-yard touchdown run with 48 seconds remaining completed the scoring. The Titans’ 31-point margin came despite modest passing production and uneven third-down execution—a useful reminder that their defensive pressure and ground game can control a game even when the offense is not consistently converting on schedule.
