NASHVILLE — The preseason opener for the Titans under Jose Wilson was a rollercoaster of flashes and frustration, culminating in a 20-18 loss to the Buccaneers. From explosive touchdown strikes by Tampa Bay's Bryan Shaw to the Titans’ stubborn, if sometimes sputtering, response led by William Downs and John Kerr, this game showed promise but left a bitter taste for the home fans.
Right out of the gate, the Buccaneers exploded with a relentless airborne assault. At 8:54 of the first quarter, Gregory Rodgers connected with Bryan Shaw for a blistering 24-yard touchdown, the kind of play that sets a tone and forces a defense to respect every route. Shaw wasn’t done either, delivering another dagger later in the fourth quarter—a 72-yard touchdown reception that turned the tide decisively in Tampa’s favor. Larry Cote’s smart and efficient quarterbacking (147 yards, 2 TDs) carved up the Titans’ secondary, finding rhythm when it mattered most.
The Titans were sluggish early, managing only a 52-yard field goal from John Kerr at 4:00 in the second quarter to get on the board. But it wasn’t just the offense feeling the heat; defensive heroics came in the form of Juan Soares’ safety, a critical moment that provided the Titans with a rare momentum swing. Soares’ sack of James Wilder, who lost a yard on the play, not only stopped a Buccaneers drive but also added two points, nudging Nashville closer.
Jose Wilson’s unit showed resilience. Kerr was money from beyond the 40-yard line twice in the fourth quarter, keeping the Titans within reach with field goals from 45 and 40 yards. His perfect 3-for-3 day on field goals highlighted that the kicking game was a rare bright spot amid a mixed offensive performance.
William Downs, stepping in at quarterback, threw for 200 yards and a touchdown, connecting on 25 of 41 passes. His touchdown strike to Henry Matthews, who hauled in 37 yards including the two-point conversion try, narrowed the gap to just two points with a little over a minute remaining. Matthews’ touchdown symbolized the Titans’ heart and urgency late in the game, but ultimately it wasn’t enough.
Defensively, the Titans managed only two sacks by George Walker but failed to force turnovers, letting Larry Cote and company dictate the scoreboard. The Buccaneers' ability to avoid mistakes—zero interceptions and no fumbles lost—was a stark contrast to Tennessee’s inability to capitalize on critical situations, including a lowly 4 of 15 on third-down conversions.
Discipline had its issues too, with five penalties resulting in 30 yards lost. On the flip side, the Buccaneers showed a bit more composure here, though they accumulated 45 penalty yards themselves. This slugfest was high on yardage and big plays but lacked the clean execution the Titans need to build on in this young preseason.
In the end, this was a game defined by timely plays from Tampa Bay’s dynamic receivers and some missed opportunities by the Titans on offense and defense. Coach Wilson and his squad will have to find answers quickly to turn these flashes of potential into victories—not just preseason feel-good stories.
The Titans’ next outing presents a chance to iron out these wrinkles. But make no mistake: this was a preseason game, and the real test for Nashville starts soon. Still, after tonight’s display, the glaring need for consistency and better execution couldn’t be clearer.
Titans Stumble in Preseason Opener, Dropping 20-18 Heartbreaker to Buccaneers
Despite a gritty battle and John Kerr's reliable foot, Jose Wilson's squad couldn’t seal the deal in a game marked by big plays and missed opportunities.
